Standards-Based Learning at Monett High School
I have received lots of questions regarding standards-based grading and what, if anything, we are doing with it at Monett High School.
The most important question that I wish to address is the “why” of standards-based learning. That is best explained by reviewing what it is we are working on at Monett High School.
Currently, at the high school level, we are concentrating on two things:
A. Identifying the essential skills (standards) that we want our students to learn in each class. We call these skills the Essential Learning Objectives, or ELOs. The rationale here is why spend a lot of valuable class time learning material students will never need again? Let's identify and concentrate on the really important material that students will need to be successful.
B. Developing a “proficiency scale” to communicate where a student is in regards to mastery on each of those identified essential skills. The reasoning behind this is that if students know exactly where they are on the identified ELOs, they know what they have to do to get where they need to be.
The above two points (standards and scales) are something that should be done regardless of how a grade is reported. It's competent teaching to identify what's important and what students need to do in order to master the essential content of each class.
There has been a lot of concern about what a transcript might look like if we change to a standards-based grading system. While any change would still be several years in the future, it is important to state now that we understand the need to clearly report grades in an easily recognizable format to colleges and universities as well as to groups offering scholarships to high school graduates. But before this conversation can even start, we first have to get very efficient at identifying what students must know and where they are on their road to mastery of that content.

MHS Random Drug Screen Policy
The Monett Board of Education approved the student random drug screening policy during its regular meeting on June 30, 2016. The policy will affect students in grades 7-12 who are involved in co-curricular and extra-currricular activities, as well as students applying for a parking permit on the Monett High School campus. Enrollment forms will be mailed home along with their class schedules later this month.
