WELCOME TO MONETT HIGH SCHOOL!
Cub Pride - August 22, 2014
MHS Opens to New Schedule, Record Enrollment

The 2014-2015 school year at MHS opened with faculty and staff welcoming a record 698 students into the building.  That is the largest first day attendance in MHS history!  As of Monday, August 18th, the “on the books” enrollment stands at 724 students: 197 freshmen, 193 sophomores, 171 juniors, and 163 seniors.

Students were greeted on day one with an orientation to the new modular (MOD) schedule.  Students spent time in each of the five resource centers: (math, social studies, communication arts, science, and library) as well as in the new large group instructional area.  The day was spent learning about the logistics of the new schedule and what to expect when classroom instruction began on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, students worked their way through their first-ever day on the new schedule, and it went extremely well.  By mid-day, students with resource time on their schedule were using it wisely and working on the “homework” they had been assigned earlier in the day.  This trend continued throughout the rest of the week.  Comments overheard from students included: "I love the resource time.  I already have an essay done"; "I like it that there are no bells because I have to keep track of time myself"; and "Mr. Anderson, when are your resource times?  I need help on Assignment 3 from last week."  By the close of the week, students and staff were very familiar with the new protocols and expectations that MOD scheduling initiated.

Other new features at MHS this year include the following: Grab-n-Go breakfast for students until 10:30 each morning; student IDs with a lunch barcode and attendance QR code; a quarterly assembly called “State of the Cubs” for recognitions and other items; and five lunch shifts to reduce the number of students in each lunch period.

Finally, a big “thank you” is due the following groups/individuals for their work in preparing MHS for all of these transitions: MHS Counselors Beth Nation and Kara Tinklepaugh, all MHS faculty and staff, the Monett R-1 maintenance department, the MHS food service department, Mr. Pruitt (SRTC Construction teacher) and his crew, the MHS Student Council, Dr. Brad Hanson, Mr. Mike Dawson, and the Monett R-1 Board of Education.  Each of these groups/individuals played a significant role over the summer in preparing MHS for a great 2014-15 school year.
