FIRST Robotics World Championships
The Monett High School For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics team FRC 5730, “The Professionals,” are on their way to the FIRST Robotics World Championships in St. Louis, Missouri. The team’s journey to the championships began at the beginning of the school year when a group of students worked to bring robotics to the high school. Throughout most of the school year, the team was busy making a business plan, fund-raising, designing, and building their robot to compete in the game Recycle Rush in Oklahoma City.
The team competed with their robot at the Oklahoma City Regional at the end of March. While at the regional competition, the team was able to meet and work with other teams and judges, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. At the competition, The Professionals competed against 60 other teams. The Professionals teamed with other Midwest teams to play the Recycle Rush game in which robots move recycle totes, trash cans, and litter to designated locations of the playing field in order to score points. Although The Professionals did not win their regional, they qualified for the world championships by winning the All Star Rookie Award for their hard work and innovation.
With the help of the Monett R-1 School Board and many local sponsors, The Professionals will travel to St. Louis to compete against 600 other teams at the world championships. In St. Louis, the team will work with and compete against teams from all around the world. The robotics students will also have the opportunity to meet national sponsors, attend workshops and conferences, and learn about a multitude of scholarships for FIRST students.
